Fishing boats Indonesia

€ 295,00

Lovely painting of an Indonesian coastal scene with fishing sampans sailing and fishing on the coast with a village and church visible.
By the acclaimed Indonesian artist Sujatno Koempoel (1912-1987). Good example of his work, master of fluidity, bringing across the movement and atmosphere of this period in Indonesia. Signed left-hand corner Koempoel, painting is in good order cleaned and re-varnished, and is without a frame.

Sujatno Koempoel was born in 1912 in Paron Village, Ngawi, Indonesia. His father was an officer with the railway company of the Dutch East Indies government during the era of colonialism. He still inherited royal blood from his ancestor, RA. Prawirodidjo, who was also known as the Prince Sentot Ali Basah Prawirodirjo. This condition allowed him to enrol in a study at the technical school (HIS) in Surabaya, which later proved to be beneficial for the development of his painting technique.
Koempoel's talent caught Van Staal's attention. He recommended Koempoel to the naturalist Gerard Pieter Adolf's, one of the proponents of the Beautiful Indie style. Dr. Soerodjo was so impressed by Koempoel's works that he decided to sponsor Sujatno Koempoel.
