Sutherland tableSOLD

This particular type of drop leaf table, or gate-leg table, is known as a Sutherland table, apparently named after Harriet, the Duchess of Sutherland, in 1833. What characterizes these Sutherland tables is the very narrow top when the leaves are down, and their trestle bases, which have two fixed legs and two movable legs joined by a long stretcher. (The movable legs swing out underneath each leaf for support when the table is fully extended.)

This English table is a later example, made about 1880 or 1890, it is superbly inlaid with satinwood and has fretted panels on the ends. It has the retailers plate of John J M 'Arevey of Newry.
